Sea, archaeology, villages and countryside: how to find your way in a region larger and more varied than you might expect.
Cilento covers the southern part of the province of Salerno, stretching from the plain of Paestum to the Gulf of Policastro. It is a wide area where coast and mountains alternate within a few kilometres.
First-time visitors often think only of the sea. But Cilento is also archaeology, with Paestum and Velia, medieval villages like Castellabate, and a hinterland of olive groves, trails and small towns.
Our advice is to choose a few bases and move slowly. The slow pace here is not a limitation: it is the best way to experience the region.
